Magnetic Locks Versus Electric Strikes: The Core Difference
A magnetic lock, often called a maglock, uses an electromagnet mounted on the frame and an armature plate mounted on the door. When power is supplied, the magnet holds the armature in place and keeps the door closed. When power is removed, the magnetic bond releases.
An electric strike is installed in the door frame where the latch enters. Instead of holding the door with magnetism, it electrically releases the strike keeper so that the existing mechanical latch can pass through. The lockset, panic hardware, or mortise lock on the door still provides the physical latching action.
That difference matters. A maglock is the primary locking device. An electric strike works with the door's existing mechanical hardware. In many commercial settings, the choice comes down to whether the opening has compatible latching hardware and whether the building needs the distinct fail-safe behavior of a magnetic lock.
How Magnetic Locks Work in Commercial Access Control
Magnetic locks are common on glass storefront doors, aluminum-framed doors, and openings where installing or adapting a traditional latch is difficult. Because the lock mounts at the top of the door and frame, it can often be added without cutting deeply into the frame.
Most maglocks are fail-safe. If building power or lock power is lost, the magnet releases and the door can open. This can be a benefit at an exit where free egress is required during an emergency. It can also be a concern for areas that must stay secured during a power failure, such as certain storage rooms or protected sections of an industrial facility.

Maglocks also require careful life-safety planning. They are often connected to a request-to-exit device, fire alarm system, emergency release, and access control panel. A credential reader may allow authorized entry, but people inside must be able to exit without relying on a card, fob, keypad, or special knowledge. The exact requirements depend on the occupancy, door location, and local authority having jurisdiction.
How Electric Strikes Work
Electric strikes are frequently chosen when a door already has a quality latch or lockset. The strike replaces or modifies the regular strike plate in the frame. When an approved credential is presented, the electric strike releases the keeper, allowing the user to pull or push the door open without turning a key.
Once the door closes, the latch re-engages mechanically. This gives electric strikes a familiar, dependable behavior: the door remains latched even when people are not actively using the access control system. It also means the installation depends heavily on the condition and compatibility of the door hardware.
Electric strikes are available in fail-secure and fail-safe configurations. A fail-secure strike stays locked when power is lost and can still allow mechanical key access where the hardware supports it. This is often preferred for exterior business entrances and rooms where security must continue during an outage. A fail-safe strike unlocks when power is removed, which may be required for specific egress applications.
Not every strike works with every door. Cylindrical latchsets, mortise locks, rim panic devices, and deadlatches have different shapes, latch dimensions, and operating requirements. A strike also needs a properly aligned door. If a sagging door puts pressure on the latch, the strike may struggle to release consistently, even if the electrical components are functioning correctly.
Security and Reliability: What Matters Most
A properly selected electric strike can provide a clean, secure solution because the door remains mechanically latched. It is often less noticeable than a maglock and can preserve the appearance of a professional entryway. It may also allow staff to keep using keys as a backup if the access system is offline.
A magnetic lock is often a practical choice for doors where a conventional strike is not feasible, including certain glass doors and specialty aluminum storefront systems. It can be highly reliable when correctly installed, powered, and integrated with egress controls. Still, its fail-safe nature means a power interruption releases the door unless the facility has an appropriate backup power strategy.
Neither product automatically makes a weak opening secure. A high-rated maglock on a poorly mounted frame or a heavy-duty strike paired with a damaged latch will not perform as intended. Before selecting hardware, inspect the complete opening: door condition, hinges, frame material, latch alignment, closer operation, weather exposure, and the way people use the entrance throughout the day.
Door Type Can Decide the Issue
For a solid commercial hollow-metal door with a compatible latch, an electric strike is often the more natural fit. It uses hardware already built into the opening and maintains a conventional locked-door feel. It can be especially effective at offices, staff doors, and controlled interior areas.
For a narrow-stile aluminum glass door, a maglock may be easier to install than trying to fit a strike into a limited frame profile. However, storefront doors vary widely. Some can accept specialized electric strikes, while others are better suited to a magnetic lock or a different access control approach.
Fire-rated doors require extra attention. Altering a rated door or frame without approved hardware can affect its rating and create a compliance problem. The same caution applies to panic hardware, stairwell doors, and openings on a required exit path. Hardware selection should support both security and safe escape, not force one goal at the expense of the other.
Installation, Power, and Maintenance Considerations
Maglocks require continuous power while locked, so power supply sizing and battery backup deserve careful planning. They also need wiring to the magnet and often additional components for release and fire alarm interface. The armature plate must move slightly to sit flush against the magnet, and loose mounting hardware can reduce holding performance.
Electric strikes generally use power only during release or, depending on their configuration, to maintain a particular locked or unlocked state. They may require frame preparation, wiring through the frame, and adjustment of the latch relationship. On older doors, correcting alignment before installing the strike can prevent repeated service calls later.
Both systems benefit from routine checks. Test access credentials, inspect wiring and door closers, confirm the latch or armature engages correctly, and verify that emergency release functions operate as intended. Choosing the Right Lock for Your Property
Start with the opening rather than the product. Ask whether the door has compatible mechanical hardware, what should happen during a power outage, whether the entry is part of an exit route, and how much traffic it receives. Then consider the building's existing access control equipment and the level of physical security required.
An electric strike is often the right choice where a compatible latch is already in place and security must remain in effect during a power loss. A magnetic lock can be the better answer for challenging door configurations or applications that require fail-safe release. There are also situations where neither is ideal and a different electrified lock, panic device, or door operator setup should be considered.
